Our main reason to visit Bologna was so see Blessed Imelda, but we also had a great time seeing other parts of the city!
We first visited the Church of Corpus Domini, where St. Catherine of Bologna's body rests...
Actually, it's where her body SITS! The Shrine contains St. Catherine's incorrupt body: sitting on a throne, along with the skulls and bones of two of her companions. Due to COVID regulations, we were only able to view St. Catherine's body through a window near the the church's main altar.
We enjoyed croissants and coffee at Piazza Maggiore, the central square in Bologna.
The highlight was definitely the pigeons! (Who Isaac continually called "chicks" and who loved croissant crumbs :)
While the kids played with the pigeons, Brian and I took turns visiting San Petronio. The church is dedicated to Saint Petronius who is the patron saint of Bologna. It is the 10th largest church in the world by volume and is noted for both its sheer size and its unfinished front facade.
The city is filled with beautiful porticoes. A portico is essentially a partially enclosed walkway that is lined with arches and columns. They are awesome for walking under with young children and a stroller!! I actually didn't snap any pictures of them (I think I was enjoying peaceful walking to do much to do so :) - but here is a picture from online:
After having an outdoor lunch not far from the the central square we drove back to our Airbnb. We were staying about 40 minutes from Bologna, high up in the foothills of a small town called Monte Baducco. Simply gorgeous! And Brian gets all the credit for driving the 9-passenger van up the tiny roads :)
