The kids went back to school on Monday!
Ellie is in 3rd grade, Francis is in 1st, Isaac is a Mittlekind (second year; “middle child”) at Kindergarten, and a Clare is still at home (although she insists on having a backpack, a mask & getting on the kindergarten bus each day).
Ellie and Francis at the Elementary School
Francis in the Garderobe (“cloakroom”) where the kids hang up their coats and change into their Hausschuhe (school sandals).
There are two first grade classes this year - which I’m thrilled about for the small class size (12 in his class, I think).
His teacher - who the children all call “Frau Lehrerin” - which means “miss teacher” (that’s what all the children call their teachers) - labeled his name as Brian. So I sent a note to school explaining that we call him by his middle name. However, at this point his teacher is still calling him by Brian. I asked Francis if he corrected her - and he said, no - he’ll just go by Brian. He even wrote Brian on his worksheet. I already labeled all of his material “Francis” - so he better switch back to using his middle name!!
Desk name tag: Brian
Ellie is across the hall from Francis and has the same lovely teacher who she’s had the past two years (the teachers start with them in 1st grade and move up with them through 4th grade)
The first day the children met at school & then walked to the parish Catholic church for a new school year church service (yes, it’s a public school!)
At home, Francis received his Schultüte
Isaac had a full day (which is 7:25am bus pick up & 12:15pm bus drop off) of Kindergarten- his first day without Francis. He said he was a little bit scary (meant scared) but he loved it :)
On the second day of school I met Francis at school dismissal to walk him home. He’ll normally be walking home with his second grade friends - which based on how he just took off without me (& Clare) I think he’ll be just fine! It’s about a 15 minute walk home. The biggest hassle right now is all the construction in front of the school, which has been delayed but will hopefully be done in a few weeks.
Clare and I after everyone left for school on the third day of school at the Kartause - asking for Mary’s intercession on the Feast of Her Nativity!
Overall the first week is going great! Brian is in Italy with the FUS students, but great neighbors/friends have been helping with all the logistics :)
And regarding Covid - here’s the latest from the principal (put into Google Translate):
The start of school is approaching, therefore the most important information for a safe start to school:
Safety phase at the start of school
In the first three weeks of school, ALL students are tested three times a week, too those who have already recovered or have been vaccinated. The usual rapid antigen test takes place twice a week ("nose bur" test), one test per week is carried out as a PCR test with mouth rinse.
The same rule applies to teachers and administrative staff.
During the safety phase, everyone (pupils and teachers and Administrative staff) an MNS outside of the classrooms and group rooms.
Self-tests
Instructions for the self-tests can be found here:
Antigen test (Monday and Friday): www.bmbwf.gv.at/selbsttest or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD3APGZnwIQ (test for the 1st and 2nd grades) https: // www. youtube.com/watch?v=XGMlrqczycs (test for the 3rd + 4th grades) PCR test (Tuesday): www.bmbwf.gv.at/allesspuelt or file: /// C: / Users / User / AppData /Local/Temp/allesspuelt_anleitung.pdf
Please watch the videos together with your child in advance. Thank you for your support!
letter of acceptance
A declaration of consent from a parent or legal guardian is essential for the tests to be carried out. You can also find this on the Ministry's website or at this link: file: /// C: /Users/User/AppData/Local/Temp/tests_sj2021_22_eve.pdf
Please give this declaration to your child reliably on the first day of school so that the test can be carried out.
All "non-school" persons (external persons) have to show a tested, vaccinated or recovery certificate and wear an MNS when entering the school building. We therefore ask the parents to wait for the children in front of school. School beginners may be accompanied into the auditorium by the parents under the above conditions (MNS, 3g).
If you want to support your child with the tests in the first week of school, you can do so in the entrance area to the indoor pool, but also pay attention to the COVID regulations there.
I wish all children and adults good health and a good start to the new school year!
Kind regards
Martin Hörmer
