Still waiting on Baby...

Now at 40 weeks and 6 days, this is officially the longest I've been pregnant!

(Ellie was born at 40 weeks and 5 days, and Francis was born at 40 weeks and 3 days).

40 weeks + 6 days

I've had two more check-ups with my midwife since my 40 week appointment.  On Saturday morning, we listened to his heartbeat for 30 minutes (CTG) and all was great - no contractions.  Then the doctor did an ultrasound - still looking good there!  With no signs of impending labor, we headed out for a boat ride on Lunz am See.

During this morning's appointment, we again listened to the baby's heartbeat for 30 minutes...but also tried some new things during that time!  First, my midwife gave me some natural pills (super tiny white little things - I can't imagine they'll do anything - but who knows!)  Then as just Brian and I were listening to the heartbeat - my midwife came back and told me that a female doctor who is trained in acupuncture was there and asked if I'd like to try that.  Sure!  She inserted 14 needles - from my feet up to my neck.  We left them in for about 30 minutes, with my midwife turning them every 10 minutes.  As she placed them I had a contraction (nothing major) and she showed me on the CTG reading how after they were inserted the contraction pattern became slightly wavy.  So that did something!  My midwife then examined me with the essential oil and said I'm slightly more dilated - about 4 cm now.  So now we're back to waiting!

I love going on walks through the pastures near our home, and walking along the streams.  Along the way I often pass horses, cows, swans - and for the first time this weekend - sheep!  So fitting because Sunday was 'Good Shepherd Sunday' and the psalm for Sunday was equally fitting:

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
In verdant pastures he gives me repose;
beside restful waters he leads me;
he refreshes my soul.

He guides me in right paths
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk in the dark valley
I fear no evil; for you are at my side.
With your rod and your staff

Although I'm so excited to meet this baby (and would really like him to come out before he's 10 lbs!!), I'm loving this time getting to enjoy the Lord's presence and His creation all around - and within - me.

Waiting on Baby...

Like his older siblings, Baby's due date has come and passed!

His ultrasound showed that everything is perfect - head down, face down, body on my left side -- placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluids looked good.  We saw his lips moving open and shut, and he had his hand resting on his forehead.

40 weeks + 1 day

The doctor estimated his weight at about 7.5 pounds...but when I told her how big Francis was (over 9 lbs) she said that I may hide babies well and she could definitely be off on the weight!  Judging by my own bump, I'd say he's definitely growing!

Today: 40 weeks + 1 day

I had a check-up with my midwife as well.  I was hooked up to a monitor and we listened to the baby's heartbeat for 30 minutes.  All was perfect!  Then my midwife examined me - my cervix is thinned (she didn't say what percent effaced) and I'm 3 cm dilated.  She then gave me an "internal massage" with an essential oil.  When she touched his head, the baby gave me quite the kick and that's when the massage ended!  She said this could stimulate labor for tonight...or a few days from now.  We'll meet her again in 3 days if the baby doesn't arrive before then!  Here's what the labor and delivery rooms look like:

The past few weeks have been very pleasant waiting for baby!  My friends threw a surprise Baby Shower for me after our Bible Study.  My mom was in town for it as well making it extra special!

The following day we had a planned Holy Hour for me and the baby at the TOR Sisters' chapel in their house at the Kartause.  It was so special to prayed over by all these amazing women!  I'm praying for a supernatural birth in the Lord's presence :)

Also of note in the days since my mom's been here...Francis had his first haircut!

Ellie hasn't had her first haircut yet, but she has been getting her hair done "more beautifully" since my mom's been in town!

The past few days have been gorgeous - so we went ahead and gave the kids their gifts from their little brother - for being such the great big siblings they are!

This baby in utero has already traveled through Austria, and made visits to Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Italy, Vatican City, Malta, Spain, France, and Monaco.  No USA visits yet - but we'll head to Vienna to get his first passport in two weeks - and he'll make his first debut in mid-June.  Although he'll be born outside the US, he is a "natural born citizen" (doesn't have to go through a naturalization process to become a citizen) -- so Kissinger for President 2052 - watch out!!

Francis Turns Two!!

Today our baby boy (only a few more days we can call him that) turned TWO!

Brian Francis Kissinger II, aka Francis or Buddy, is quite the character these days and brings us so much joy!

His favorite activities are smiling, climbing, dumping things out, and playing with/copying everything his sister does!  His favorite color is orange - and lately when he sees anything orange he'll tell us it's "the favorite one I ever seen!"  He likes to pretend he's Fr. Matt by sprinkling people with holy water or washing his hands like he's seen Father do before the consecration.  He also loves to tell us about the time he saw Joshy, our teenage neighbor, dump water out his window.  Most of all, he loves his sister, mommy, and daddy -- who he definitely continues to take after when it comes to personality and general enthusiasm for life!

Babymoon / Anniversary Getaway to Upper Austria

This week (on Good Friday) Brian and I will celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary!  So thanks to some wonderful students watching our kids back at home, we headed out of town for a quick getaway / babymoon :)

We spent the night in Bad Ischl, a spa town in the southern part of Upper Austria (about two-and-a-half hours west of us).

So nice to getaway without the kids...except for this one :)

We enjoyed the pool, sauna, and relaxation room in our hotel!

The next day, we drove to the famous town of Hallstatt about 15 minutes away.  We rode the cable car up the mountain.

Views of Halstatter See (Hallstatt Lake) were beautiful even with the clouds, rain, and bit of snow coming down.

We then walked along the upper mountain path to the world's oldest Salt Mine.

Along the way, there was a display of St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners (and my confirmation saint!)  She was martyred at age 29 and this is why miners' jackets have 29 buttons.

We got to ride down the 64-meter-long Mega-slide, Europe's longest wooden slide!

After the tour, we enjoyed lunch at the building on top of the mountain overlooking the lake.

We, of course, scheduled this day as our re-introduction of gluten-containing grains... Our first time eating pasta in over 30 days and it was sooooo good - especially with some salt from the mine :)

Then we took the cable car down the mountain and checked out the quaint, lovely town of Hallstatt.

We enjoyed our peaceful drive home, still admiring the beauty of the Austrian mountains and foothills around us!

Back at home in time for dinner, we went out for pizza (did I mention it was our day to eat gluten?!) with the kids.  Ellie enjoyed the special Nutella pizza in honor of the 4th anniversary of her baptism!  Francis enjoyed it as well :)

It was great to getaway... and great to be back home!
